Gunnery Sergeant John M. Spruill served in the United States Marine Corps during WWI and was one of the original American Legion Post 143 members when the Post was chartered on March 19, 1935
On March 19, 1935, thirty veterans of WW I signed the charter establishing the American Legion Carroll Post 143, of the Department of Georgia. Since its creation, the post continues to be an active contributor to the veteran family, and the community.
American Legion Post 143 held Their annual BBQ Fundraiser Event at the Carroll County AG Center on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. The proceeds raised will be used for the support of veterans, their families and for the children & youth throughout the community.
The Post 143 Family took part in the Council on Aging's Thanksgiving Luncheon by presenting the Colors, recruiting and donated a flag and flag pole as a door prize. Raffle tickets were also available for a M1-Garand and AR-15 rifle; the Auxiliary handed out poppies. Donations were welcome.
The Post Family held a abbreviated Combined Membership meeting followed by a Thanksgiving Dinner.Commander Merriss and Sr. Vice Steve Fuller presented Sheriff Langley with a plaque for providing outstanding service to the Post from 2014 through 2017. Sherriff Langley in turn, donated a $500 check to the Post; Marine Corp League and the Carroll County Memorial Park.

Carroll Post 143 sponsored the Carrollton High School Precision Air Rifle Team this year to compete in the American Legion's 2018 National Junior 3-Position Air Rifle Tournament. CHS's Rifle Team placed 2nd in the state with a total score of 2302 out of a possible 2400. However, they were 20 points shy of advancing to the semi-finals and a trip to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs

Carroll Post 143 Legionnaire Hugh Lee Young, age 95, a decorated WWII vateran and POW passed away on May 11,2018. Young's B-24 Liberator was shot down over Italy. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war in the infamous Stalag 17 located in Austria for 500 days. He was one of the longest surviving POW's in Georgia. Additionally, a Toy Drop Box was placed at the Post where members of the post family gave toys and Cash Donations. A monument and headstone were dedicated Friday at the Atlanta cemetery gravesite of an American Red Cross nurse, Camille Louise O'Brian of Emory Hospital who died 100 years ago while serving in Blois, France during WWI. Carroll County 4H precision Air Rifle team member Morgan Frank and 14 other competitors from around the country attended the American Legion's National Air Rifle Championship Tournament at Colorado Springs, Colorado from July 23-28, 2019. Commander Joe Harrod accepted a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Post family from Toys-4-Tots coordinator, Lori Graham for donating, collecting and volunteering its services to provide a Merry Christmas to needy children in Carroll County, GA during the 2018 season. Over 13,855 toys were distributed and 3,669 children were supported.

Legionnaires Frank Joswick, Bob Hilliard and Tim Bass participated in two Trunk or Treat events this year. The first event took place on Oct 29th at Pioneer Ford in Bremen, Ga where there were 2,500 folks in attendance. The other event was held at the First Baptist Church in Temple, Ga on Oct. 31st where hundreds braved the cold and wind to bring their little ghouls and gobblins to recive treats.
Post 143 Family members are volunteering to collect toys and donations for the Toys For Tots program again this year. Toy collection is being held in front of Walmart on weekends beginning on Nov 2-3 and will run through Dec 1st for 2 hour periods from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
Last year over 900 families and 3,700 children were able to experience Christmas in 2018 in part because of the help provided by the Post 143 family.

At the August 4, 2020 meeting of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, it was declared that Carroll County is officially a Purple Heart County. The Proclamation was required for recognition by the Military Order of the Purple Heart organization to honor and remember those military personnel that were combat wounded and/or killed in action. Due to the China Virus, The heritage Days program for students in the 5th grade had to be canceled and so was the Flag retirement Ceremony. However, members of the AL Post Honor Guard, with the help of UWG, created a video of the Flag Retirement Ceremony which was filmed at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.

Tim Bass and Frank Joswick represented American Legion Post 143 at the 13th Annual Trunk or Treat event held on October 30, 2020, at Pioneer Ford, Bremen, GA. Thanks to the generosity of the Post Family, 31 pounds of candy was given out to all the little Goblins & Ghouls.
American Legion members again partiipated in the Carroll County Toys For Tots program by volunterering their time to help collect Toys for children that would otherwise go without a present to open on Christmas day. Over 16,000 toys and 4,500 children received toys for Christmas.

GA Post 143 Boys State Chair Steve Fuller and six students from area schools attended the American Legion's Boys State Camp from 13-19 June 2021. Due to the Wuhan Virus, ony 185 students within the State participated in the program.

The american legion Post 143 Family served 1,238 plates of the best BBQ in town during its annual BBQ fundraiser. The Post 143 Family donated 68 pounds of candy that was handed out by Frank Joswick and Tim Bass to little Gobblins & Ghouls at the 14th Annual Pioneer Ford Tunk or Treat Event held on October 28, 2021

The Post 143 Family held their annual Thanksgiving Dinner for members, their families and invited guests on Thursday, 16 November, 2021. Turkey, Ham and all the trimmings were served along with dessert.

The Post 143 Family collected toys for the annual Carroll County Toys-4-Tots program, and were presented to the County Coordinator, Lori Goodine. The Post 143 family members donated toys again this year for the Carroll County Toys-4-Tots program. Volunteers also helped to sort and distribute toys from December 3rd through December 18th. Volunteers are:

Post 143 Cmdr Ronnie Pate and JVC Steve Fuller paticipated in the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony on March 6, 2022 and presented brothers Caleb and Avery Grayson with A "Good Citizenship Citation and a $200 check was presented to the Troop No. 39 Scout Master, Lisa Chandler.
Post 143 Family members and friends celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a good ole fashioned Irish Dinner with all the trimmings.
Post 143 Legionnaires Frank Joswick, Bob Thogmartin, Rose Miller, Tim Bass, and Ben Sinclair participated in the Special Olympics Field & Track event on March 29, 2022, and hosted by Central High School. Students from grades elementary to High school from around the county took part in this annual event. Post members were in charge of "Shotput"
The Commander at Post 338, Fairfield, requested help from Post 143 to raise a Flag at a newly developed Veterans Burial site located within the Meadowbrook Memory Gardens Cemetery. The Flag Raising Ceremony was performed by Post 143 Team members Joe Harrod, Bobby Lanely, Steve McEwen, Ron Knowles, and Dale Robinson. Afterwards, the Team was given a specially made Challenge coin by the McBrayers, owners of the cemetery.

New for 2021-2022 Post year, The Post will now sponsor Central High School's Shotgun Club. Catagories include Sporting Clays, Trap, and Skeet shooting. State Championships run from June 17-19. The Post will recognize the top 4 Participants with medals.
American Legion Dist 5/Post 143 commander Ronnie pate recognizes Steve Fuller, Dist 5 SVC/Post 143 JVC, and 15 year volunteer at Boys State for his faithful and honorable service. Cmdr. Members of the Post Family took part in the 4th of July Peoples Parade in downtown Carrollton, GA. Don Levans was the Grand Marshal and rode in a fifties Cown Vic driven by Bill hearnburg. 5th District Commander, Ronnie Pate followed behind in a WWII Jeep. Other family members rode in a Military Vehicle which was awarded 2nd place among those that participated in the Parade.

Post 143 Family volunteers took part in the 2-day Heritage Days event held at the Carroll County AG Center on Sep 22-23. Approx. 1200 3rd graders from 3 county's participated in the 2 day event. The Temple High Social Studies Department was very excited to hold its first annual "Student Vet Connect" this year on Thursday, November 3 from 7:30-3:30. Students at Bowdon Middle School celebrated Veterans Day by joining with members of the American Legion Post 143 Honor Guard to raise a Huge new American Flag that was purchased for the school by the Bowdon Kiwanis Club. American Legion Post 143, Georgia, Commander Ronnie Pate presnted Villa Rica High School Honor Graduate, Addison Orr with the first annual $1000 "Bob Hilliard" Scholarship on April 25, 2023. The Scholarship Review Committee (Frank Joswick, Steve Fuller, Bill Hearnburg, and Randy Purser) reviewed 26 scholarship application packages and selected Addison Orr as the top receipient.

The Trinka Davis VA Clinic has started back with the coffee bar on a limited basis. (3 x month) And wass asking volunteers to help. On September 16, 2023, Members of Post 143 along with the Pulaski Chapter of the SAR, attended a Memorial Service at Bethel Baptist Church in Honor of POW/MIA Korean War Veteran, Army Sergeant First Class James Levon Wilkinson who was finally returned home after being reported missing on September 8, 1950, following his unit coming under attack along the Naktong River in South Korea.

Beef Fest! Post 143 Fundraiser Chair Rose Miller has set up and is ready to roll at the Carrollton AG Center. The American Legion Post 143 Honor Guard took part in 2 Weath Laying Ceremonies over a two day period. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the West Georgia Memorial Park and on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park. Wreath Laying ceremonies are conducted throughout the Nation annually on the 3rd Sunday each year.
Michelle Morgan, CCBOC Chairman, presented Past Commander Don Levans with a Carroll County Proclamation in recognition for many years of outstanding efforts in supporting veterans and citizens throughout Carroll County. Steve Fuller, Post 143 Commander, also honored Don by designating the Post's main meeting room as the "Don Levans Hall".

Post 143 Children and Youth chairman Derek Warren had a busy month in May. He handed out medals, certificates, and monetary gifts to JROTC Cadets, a student with high scholastic achievement , students attending Girls and Boys State, and a $1000 Bob Hilliard Memorial scholarship.
Frank Joswick, representing American Legion Post 143, along with civilian, John Harris, took part in Temple High School's annual Invest-30 program where folks from around the business community were meeting and greet High School students as they arrived to begin their first day of classes. high-fives, fist bumps,handshakes and welcomes were the norm from 0745 to 0830. Payton Terrell was awarded one of only six Department of Georgia's $1000 scholarships made available for 2024. Payton was invited to Post 143 along with her parents, Adrian & Ericka Terrell. Payton was to be presented with a "Presentation Check" and a Scholarship Certificate, but unfortunately, Payton started Classes that week at Augusta University where she will be majoring in Early Childhood Education. Saturday, Sept 7th, Post 143 Legion Family members Maggie Miller and JeNeen Walton hosted a gun safety training and awareness seminar for women of Auxiliary Unit 143. The seminar was held in Don Levans Hall at the Carroll County Veteran’s Building and the feedback was very positive. During the Post's Combined Membership meeting held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, two Girl Scouts and several members of the Sheriff's Department were presented with Legion certificates and Challenge coins. Members from the Sheriff's Department were recognized for providing transportation to students attending Boys State Camp and a "Humvee" so Post Family folks had a vehicle to ride in during the July Peoples Parade.
