In keeping with the Legion's 100 Year Anniversary, Post 143 invited Past National Commander Dale Barnett to speak at its Memorial Day Ceremony. Cmdr Barnett recounted the begining of the American Legion which was federally chartered on Sep. 16, 1919. He went on to say that throughout the first century, the American Legion built a legacy on such accompishments as the creation of the U.S. Flag Code, Helped start the Veterans Administration, The GI Bill, and helping veterans receive benefits for health care conditions based on the honorable service, including acceptance of Agent Ogange exposure as service connected. Following Cmdr. Barnett's speech, Past Post 143 Cmdr. Don Levans read the names of the original signers of the Post charter while a bell was rung in their honor. Past Post 143 Cmdr's took part in the Wreath Laying Ceremony while the Rifle Squad performed a 21 gun salute. The Color Guard posted and retired the colors. Various Local and State elected representatives were also present during the ceremony. Nadine Asberry from 5th District sung the "National Anthem" while local vocalist, Mimi Gentry sung "God Bless America." Music was provided by the Carroll Wind Ensemble under the direction of Terry Lowery. Following the Ceremony, the Post family held a luncheon for invited guests and the post membership. Following the Luncheon, an "Open House" for the public was held at the post between 2 - 5pm where military memorabilia was on display. Later that evening, the Post treated the community to a free concert held at the Amphitheater (AMP) in downtown Carrollton.
