Auxiliary Unit 99, Baldwin Post 99, submitted their application for Unit charter in February 1926, with eleven (11) charter members. Permanent charter issued May 17th, 1926. Mrs Fred R. Walker elected first President.

In Foley was located at 209 West Laurel Street (Highway 98 West) which today is now "THE GIFT HORSE RESTAURANT". The building was originally an old Church. Post 99 bought the building in 1926.

BALDWIN POST 99, Foley, HOSTS ALABAMA DEPARTMENT CONVENTION

The 1927 American Legion Department of Alabama Convention was held in Foley on August 22nd thru August 24th, which was the largest State Convention ever held by the Legion. At this convention, Edward L. Murray, Post Commander, was elected a State Vice-Commander. Later, he became the fourteenth (14th) Department Commander.

BALDWIN POST 99 HAS SECOND HOME

All Veterans in Baldwin County who were members of the American Legion were members of Baldwin County Post 99 as it was the only Post in the County. It's membership was fairly large and presented some hardship for some members who had to travel long distances to attend meetings. In 1937, Dr. C.O. Godard, the Post 99 Commander, from Fairhope purchased a large two story house on Highway 98, (now Old Hwy 98 Scenic Drive)..

Baldwin Post 99 served the Foley and Baldwin County area during World War II as the local USO (United Service Organization) during the 1940's (1941-1945). It is unknown how many service men and women attended activities at the Baldwin Post on East Laurel Street, the first home of Baldwin Post 99.

On October 25, 1949, Baldwin Post 99 became the legal owner of approximately three (3) acres of certain and real property in Baldwin County, which is located on the east side of Highway 59 South, which is a two (2) lane highway just south of the Foley City limits. It will take approximately 2 and 1/2 years to complete construction of the third (3) post home for Post 99.

An addition was added to the main structure on the south side of the building in line with the north side and the roof line was kept the same to maintain balance. A brick sign, being in front of the property, negated the reason for a sign on the building and it was removed, an attic vent was installed and some windows were changed as well. The pictures show the modifications done in 1954.

In 1962, American Legion Post 199 was chartered in Fairhope in Baldwin County. Present Post 99 members which elected to transfer their membership, were allowed to do so. Post 199 is the first post to break away from Post 99. Actual transfer letter dated February 9, 1963.

FIRE DESTROYS LEGION POST 99 IN FOLEY

A fire destroyed Baldwin Post 99's third (3rd) home on Saturday, July 19th, 1992 at approximately 3:00 PM. The building was a total loss and appeared to have started in the attic. No one was injured in the fire, but the loss of the building, its contents, and the heartache felt by each member cannot be measured. Very little was recovered from the ashes.

Foley Fire Chief Joe Bouzan said Sunday the fire that destroyed the American Legion Post 99 building was still under investigation until the exact cause had been determined. Fire officials believe the cause "appears to be" electrical, adding "it looks like it started in the attic. The smoke from the fire slowed traffic to a crawl Saturday afternoon on Highway 59.

The newly constructed home for Baldwin County American Legion Post 99 was dedicated today, February 27th, 1993 at the Post home on Highway 59 South. The Dedication Speech was given by Mr. Andrew Cooper from Post 44 in Gulf Shores, with eighty-six (86) Members and guests present. Following the Dedication speech, dinner was served to all in the big hall.
