About This Post
Post Namesake
Temporary Charter issued on 28 August 1925 with (38) Charter Members and Martin S. Holms listed as the First Post Commander and Miles M. Morris as the Adjutant. Our permanent charter was signed on 24 April 1926 and signed by the Department of Alabama on 8 May 1926 with Edward L. Murray listed as the 2nd Commander and Hilding J. Linquist as the Adjutant. Baldwin 99 was the first American Legion Post in Baldwin County.
Notable Members
Edward L. Murray, 2nd Commander attended the Department Convention in Huntsville, Al in August 1926 and as Foley was the youngest post in the state, CDR Murray was instrumental in winning a very spirited contest with Huntsville to host the 1927 Alabama Department Convention.
The 1927 American Legion 9th Department Convention was indeed held in Foley on August 22nd to 24th and was the largest state convention ever held by the Legion in that period. Commander Edward L. Murray was elected a State Vice Commander and later became the fourteenth (14th) Department Commander.
What Makes this Post Unique
Based on Permanent Charter dates, Foley Post 99 was the 24th to be organized in the state.
From the original 38 charter members, eleven (11) became Commander, Five (5) became Adjutants. To date we have had seventy (70) different Post Commanders, 19 of which served multiple terms. We had had only twenty one (21) different Adjutants in our 88 year existence. Today, Post 99 is the second largest in the 33rd District which is comprised of 11 posts. Foley Post 99 is the second largest post in the 3rd Division of the State of Alabama with 419 members. Post 99 has the largest Paid Up For Life (PUFL) membership in the state of Alabama with 155 living members. Two (2) Post 99 Commanders have become Department of Alabama Commanders, Edward Murray and Morgan Odom. PDC Morgan Odom is our longest serving member and is still active at Post 99 after 66 continuous years of service and 67 years as a member of the American Legion.

In Foley was located at 209 West Laurel Street (Highway 98 West) which today is now "THE GIFT HORSE RESTAURANT". The building was originally an old Church. Post 99 bought the building in 1926.

The 1927 American Legion Department of Alabama Convention was held in Foley on August 22nd thru August 24th, which was the largest State Convention ever held by the Legion. At this convention, Edward L. Murray, Post Commander, was elected a State Vice-Commander. Later, he became the fourteenth (14th) Department Commander.

All Veterans in Baldwin County who were members of the American Legion were members of Baldwin County Post 99 as it was the only Post in the County. It's membership was fairly large and presented some hardship for some members who had to travel long distances to attend meetings. In 1937, Dr. C.O. Godard, the Post 99 Commander, from Fairhope purchased a large two story house on Highway 98, (now Old Hwy 98 Scenic Drive)..

On October 25, 1949, Baldwin Post 99 became the legal owner of approximately three (3) acres of certain and real property in Baldwin County, which is located on the east side of Highway 59 South, which is a two (2) lane highway just south of the Foley City limits. It will take approximately 2 and 1/2 years to complete construction of the third (3) post home for Post 99.

POST 99 ADDITION ADDED IN 1954

An addition was added to the main structure on the south side of the building in line with the north side and the roof line was kept the same to maintain balance. A brick sign, being in front of the property, negated the reason for a sign on the building and it was removed, an attic vent was installed and some windows were changed as well. The pictures show the modifications done in 1954.

FIRE DESTROYS LEGION POST 99 IN FOLEY

A fire destroyed Baldwin Post 99's third (3rd) home on Saturday, July 19th, 1992 at approximately 3:00 PM. The building was a total loss and appeared to have started in the attic. No one was injured in the fire, but the loss of the building, its contents, and the heartache felt by each member cannot be measured. Very little was recovered from the ashes.

Fire officials believe the cause "appears to be" electrical, adding "it looks like it started in the attic. The smoke from the fire slowed traffic to a crawl Saturday afternoon on Highway 59.

The newly constructed home for Baldwin County American Legion Post 99 was dedicated today, February 27th, 1993 at the Post home on Highway 59 South. The Dedication Speech was given by Mr. Andrew Cooper from Post 44 in Gulf Shores, with eighty-six (86) Members and guests present. Following the Dedication speech, dinner was served to all in the big hall.
