On January 4, 1963, American Legion Post 44 was chartered in Gulf Shores, also in Baldwin County Alabama. Present Post 99 members which elected to transfer were allowed to do so, Post 44 is the second (2nd) post to break away from Baldwin Post 99.

As listed in the History of the American Legion in Alabama, 1948 - 1976 Volume III, the only reference made to Post 44 was to the original nineteen (19) Charter Auxiliary Members who probably transferred from Baldwin Auxiliary Unit 99.
