The Beginning

On June 12, 1919, Jasper Berry, Richard N Haydon and Charles P Daly met in the Sherriff's Office, located in the County Courthouse in Ventura, California. There they discussed the possibility of forming an American Legion Post in Ventura County. They agreed to contact as many ex-servicemen as possible and inquire as to the interest in forming a post. Gathering Information

On July 20, 1919, Jasper Berry and Richard N Haydon traveled to Los Angeles to hear Theodore Roosevelt Junior one of the founders of the American Legion, speak on the Legion and gather firsthand the information required to establish a post. While in Los Angeles Berry and Haydon secured an application for a charter, to their dismay they were advised no charter could be granted for a County wide post.

Just two days after the first Caucus of the American Legion in America held in Saint Louis, Missouri. On September 12, 1919 Post 48 received its Charter. The first meeting of Post 48 was held September 19, 1919 in the Superior Court Room of the Ventura County Courthouse. The meeting was called to order at 8:00 PM and Jasper Berry was elected temporary Chairman. Charles P Daly was elected temporary Secretary.

Announcement For Post Elections

On September 30, 1919 "The Oxnard Daily Courier" ran a small piece announcing the Ventura post had received its charter from the national organization. On October 15, 1919 the same paper ran an announcement http://www.post48.org/firstmtg.html that the American Legion was to meet on Tuesday, October 21, 1919 at the Court House to elect its officers and form a permanent organization. The article invited all ex-soldiers and sailors to attend.

Commander Frank A Arbuckle Resigns

The first Commander of Post 48, Frank A Arbuckle a resident of Fillmore, and served as Commander from 1919 to 1920, on July 6, 1920 he resigned as Commander to run for California State Senator. Tumultuous Times

First Air Show In Ventura County

As World War II approached the WPA built a 1,980-ft. runway on 35 acres one mile west of the town of Oxnard dubbed Ventura County Airport. In one of the more spectacular achievements of Oxnard Post 48, the post organized promoted and managed an Air Show to commemorate the opening and dedication on July 4, 1935. 10,000 spectators attended the show.

Ceremonial Sword Presentation

During the City of Oxnard Veterans Day Program hosted by Oxnard Post 48, November 11, 2011 Post 48 presented a naval ceremonial sword to Retired Navy Captain Ralph Scaffidi. Captain Scaffidi’s sword had been stolen when he shipped it to his home from his last Command. He had his sword since his graduation from the Naval Academy.
