Chartered

Ray Lines American Legion Post 64 was chartered July 1, 1921. Thomas Nevens was the first Commander in 1920. (apparently) Post 64 was formed and held meetings before it was officially chartered. Post 64 Ladies Auxiliary was first active in 1922. Mary McKinney was the first Commander and held the position until 1927. Post 64 built it's own building of log construction at 235 West 10th Street in Salida in 1935. The original building is..

The first official meeting of the Legion Auxiliary Unit was held in the then designated "Legion Hall" on December 5, 1921. The officers were: Mary McKinney, President; Nellie Duncan, Vice President; and, Helene Williamson, Secretary, Treasurer.

County Courthouse Construction

Jul 1, 1928
County voters decided to relocate the Chaffee County courthouse from Buena Vista to Salida. County Commissioners needed a courthouse but had no funds. Post 64 came up with a plan to raise the funds and collected $120,000. Construction of the new courthouse began in 1931 and was completed in 1932. Chaffee County agreed to pay the Post $670 per month. After 25 years the Post conveyed the building to Chaffee County.

Army Maj Gen Walter Golden Jr Retires

Upon his retirement after 33 years of service, Major General Walter Golden Jr said: "There is no more noble profession than serving in the military and leading America's sons and daughters". Our Post is proud to have sponsored Gen Golden to Boys State in 1975. That experience led to an invitation to apply to West Point upon graduation from Salida High School in 1977. Memorial Day Activities

Americian Legion Ray Lines Post 64, Mount Shavano VFW, Post 3820, Detachment 1420 of the US Marine Corps League, marched down Salida's "F" Street for The 2018 Memorial Day Parade, ending at Riverside Park for the ceremonies.

The speaker was  Ray Lines Post 64, Commander Jim Preston. The National Anthem was performed by Jennifer Scanga, who has been singing the anthem at the annual ceremony for the last 15 years. VFW member Larry Walrath played taps.

Joe Beakey of Poncha Springs was sworn in Jan. 15 as the new commander of American Legion Ray Lines Post No. 64 in Salida.

American Legion Ray Lines Post No. 64 conducted a Post Everlasting Memorial Ceremony March 19 for Lauren “Larry” Bussey, who was a member of the post for 13 years.
