Post 2's Namesake KIA, St. Mihiel, France

Sep 26, 1918

The 90th Infantry Division officially came into being at Camp Travis Texas, on August 23, 1917 under the command of MG Henry Allen. It was raised from draftees from the states of Texas and Oklahoma. John C. Daniels from Collinsville, Oklahoma was one of them.

Post 2's Namesake Returns Home

Jun 14, 1921

Corporal John Daniels was KIA in September of 1918. His body was buried at a location in France known only by it's map co-ordinates and referred to as "Isolated Graves", and remained there until 18 JUN 1919.

His remains were then dis-interred and taken to the American Cemetery at St. Mihiel, France for proper burial.

On 18 APR 1921 his remains were once again dis-interred, then prepared for shipment from Europe to the United States. The shipment..

A Veterans Building For Collinsville

While it may be unclear what the exact circumstances were at the time of the ideas conception, it's clear that by October 1945 there were efforts underway in Collinsville to provide a more suitable home for local veterans. This undertaking by American Legion Post 2 and others was spearheaded by local merchant Sol Bayouth, a prominent figure of the time.

New Veterans Building Dedicated

It was a grand day for American Legion Post 2 members and others from Collinsville and elsewhere as the new Veterans Building, (Shown here shortly after it's completion and prior to its dedication), was placed into service and turned over to the veterans with much jubilation and fanfare!

Among the festivities that day was a "Bring Your Basket" picinic lunch at Noon, along with free lemonade. A huge parade down Main Street was held at 1:30...

Through The 50's

Apr 1953

Throughout the 1950's many activities took place at the "Veterans Building". Radio station KVOO routinely made their Noon Brodcast live outside the bldg., and it was home to Tri-County Fair Exhibits at the annual fair.

Numerous Civic Groups used the building for meetings and events, and the veterans hosted regular "sock-Hops" and dances, along with regular weekend breakfasts and fried fish dinners.

The 60's and beyond

During the 1960's things were good, and all was well with the American Legion and VFW carry-ing on as usual with dances, dinners, and all sorts of civic/community activities taking place at the posts.

During the 70's and 80's things began to change a little. New members were in short supply and the membership was getting a little long in the tooth.

By the time the 90's arrived eligable veterans had become a rare commodity, and membership..

The Early 2000's

The Post Home was showing sure signs of wear and Post 2 was running with minimal active membership. The Auxiliary Unit was working very hard helping the post function, and they managed to keep it plodding along through those tough times holding Veterans Day Events and other activities with an absolute bare-bones crew!

Unfortunately, dark skies were in the future for Post 2's home.

July 7, 2012 was a very sad day in the history of Post 2. The building had been shutttered and was no longer in active use as there was simply not enough funding available to keep up with maintenence and the needed repairs, and then it happened.

On November 11, 2016 the revitalized and reconstructed original home of Post 2 was Re-Dedicated and placed back in service to the community of Collinsville.

American Legion And VFW Join Forces

May 16, 2019

On May 16th, 2019 American Legion Post 2 moved their official location from 903 W. Main Street to 15637 N. 137th E. Avenue.

This move was made in a spirit of co-operation and support with the VFW Post, in an effort to reduce the operating costs and be able to offer enhanced services to members of both organizations, as well as providing one central location for the community's veterans to reach out to when in need..
