About This Post
Post Namesake
Post 30 was named for John H. Slaughter, a member of the local community who gave his life for his country in World War I. Born on April 2, 1889, Slaughter worked as a cowboy after finishing school. Slaughter enlisted and was assigned to the 353rd Infantry of the American Expeditionary Force. He was killed in combat in France on October 27, 1918, a week before the armistice that brought the war to an end. He is buried in Arlington Cemetary. Also killed in World War I from the area around Post 30 were Richard w. Judd (December 17, 1898 to April 12, 1916),Sidney Severens (March 24, 1891 to June 7, 1918) and Andres Mascar (April 14, 1891 to November 1, 1918).
What Makes this Post Unique
John H. Slaughter Post 30 is an integral part of the White Mountain Arizona community, not only because of its participation in and sponsorship of community activites and events, but also because its new Post Hall provides a welcome space for many other community groups to hold events, including the Firemen's Ball, the Hospital Christmas Party, the AZ Dept of Corrections Christmas Party, the Apache County Health Dept Flu Shot Clinic, not to mention weddings, anniversaries and other private celebrations. The Post has furnished food, showers and a gathering place to hundreds during local forest fire disasters.

On December 22, 1919, only six months after the National American Legion adopted its Constituton and bylaws, fifteen men from Springerville, Eagar and Nutrioso, Arizona applied to become the John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30. On January 5, 1920, their charter application was approved by the National, having been previously approved by the Arizona American Legion. The Post took its name from a local young man, John Hamilton Slaughter, who had lost his life..

On December 19, 1935, for the sum of $200.00, the John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30 acquired from the Becker Mercantile Company a property on South Mountain Avenue in Springerville. That property became the home of the Post. In 1991 the interior of the Post underwent remodeling by Merle Harper and Herb Erhart, who also enclosed the front porch, and built a 12 foot wide covered walkway the sidewalk. This building remained the home..

West had already served as Commander from 1956 to 1961. His twenty-three years as Commander mark his as the longest-serving Commander in the history of Post 30 to date. He has few rivals for this honor.

On July 4, 1988 the John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30 of Springerville erected a memorial to Sheriff Sam Jaramillo, killed on duty while responding to a domestic disturbance September 25, 1975. Jaramillo was a member of the American Legion, and had served in Korea from 1952-1955. He left behind a wife and three sons.

Slaughter American Legion Post 30 in Springerville the Apache Nation's Medal of Valor for the help and support the Color Guard has provided to Apache burials and ceremonies. Members of the Color Guard receiving the award were Ralph V. Salce, Jr., Merle F. Harper, Emilio Orona, Larry Lee Rhodes, Wayne Barsness, and Darrel A. Bump.

The Auxiliary had selected two students, Amie Park and Vanessa Gower, from Round Valley High School, both juniors heading to their senior year.
