What Makes this Post Unique

For 100 years the veterans of Alexandria have served their community through the good works of the American Legion.  Prior to the formation of the American Legion a group of WWI veterans formed a veterans’ service organization known as the "Great War Veterans of America".  That group of veterans voted to join the Department of New York American Legion at its founding.  Post 904 was named after 1st Lt. John B. Lyman and his brother Gould Lyman founded the veterans service organization that later became The American Legion in Alexandria Bay.  The Post is located in the heart of the Thousand Islands and the beautiful Boldt Castle can be seen on Heart Island from the Post dining room.  Post 904 supports all the programs the American Legion supports and continues to send several boys a year to Boys State and have even seen one of our sponsors make Boy's Nation.  Post 904 orators regularly score at the highest levels of the Department competition and have seen several different ones make the final five in the Department.  The post has sponsored Boy Scouts since May 10th, 1948 and the Troops and Packs have distinguished themselves at the highest levels in scouting and community service.  John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904 offers new programs of the American Legion like Legion Riders and Jr. shooting sports and have come up with many of our own like Women’s shooting and darts.  Post 904 supports the community in both outreach, charity and philanthropic efforts.  The post home is used by the community, schools and civic organizations to raise money for charities and support their organizations.  John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904 thrives because its history IS American Legion history.  The firsts in so many American Legion efforts Nationally can be found on these timelines either in step or ahead of State or National efforts.  The timeline speaks for itself.
