These 2 letters are early examples of the post acting as service officers for the welfare of local veterans. There are minutes decades earlier of doing the same thing but these two early letters show Post 904's role in getting benefits to the local veteran started before Service Officer were introduced by the American Legion. The need and the application of benefit advocacy has been a constant of the American Legion for 100 years. Post service officers were introduced later to help veterans with benefits. Recent history has service Officers acting as contacts for veterans to professional services dealing with their benefits. Benefits are too complicated and too important NOT to have the most up to date professionally trained assistance from a County or State American Legion acredited serviec officers. Today's service officer still advocates for veterans, finds help and services for veterans and passes information about 'NEW' benefits offered to veterans to the post. The role changes but the need never does. Today's service officers are often the first person a veteran may come across and remains one of the ones we are the most proud of projecting.
