Post Namesake

Percy Arthur Stevens and John Lincoln Chute. Percy Stevens graduated from Bend High School. Stevens died while serving his country in World War I. John Chute was a Math and History teacher and coach at Bend High School. He died serving his country in World War II.

People On the Move (First Female Post 4 Commander) Published Jul 9, 2008 at 05:00AM Vicki English has been named commander of Stevens Chute Post 4 of the American Legion in Bend. English is the first female veteran to hold this position since the post was created in 1919. She previously served as the post’s adjutant for two years and was the senior officer responsible for administration. English has been a member of the American Legion for 26 years. While serving in the Navy, English was stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland and the Bureau of Naval Personnel. She has lived in Bend since 1990 and has worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Central Oregon and Alaska.

Post 4 Application into the American Legion

In July 8, 1919, military veterans in Bend, Oregon applied for their temporary charter into the American Legion. The American Legion post in Bend would be originally named Percy A. Stevens Post 4. In November 1920, Post 4 applied for its permanent charter. The members of Percy A. Stevens Post 4 submitted the paperwork.
