On January 20, 2018, American Legion Stevens-Chute Post 4 held its American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. Due to the time-frame to hold the contest, it was held following the District 5 Winter meeting at Inn At Cross Keys Station in Madras, Oregon. The contest had 4 contestants from Bend's Summit High School. The 4 contestants were 2 Juniors and 2 Freshmen from the school's Speech and Debate club. After each contestant provided an 8-10 minute prepared and 3-5 minute assigned orations on the United States Constitution, the winner was announced. Summit High School Freshman Jonathan "Jack" Skidmore ended up being the winner of the Post contest. Since there wasn't any other contestants from posts within District 5, Jonathan "Jack" won the District 5 title as well. Mr. Skidmore will represent both Stevens-Chute Post 4 and District 5 at the Area 4 oratorical contest in Burns, Oregon on February 17, 2018. The Area 4 contest is the semi-final round for the Department (State) of Oregon.
