The Formation

Nov 9, 1944
On November 9, 1944, twenty six civic-minded veterans of Wickliffe met to form an American Legion Post. With the thought of God and Country and the opportunity of better community service by the veterans of Wickliffe, the agenda was set up with Joseph Varnum as temporary chairman and William Russel as temporary secretary. The Temporary Charter

By December 7, 1944, the temporary charter was issued and – on one glorious evening December 14th – the Constitution and By-Laws were adopted and the first official election of officers was made. Formal Installation of First Officers

On January 25, 1945, the formal installation and initiation was held at the High School auditorium. It was here that the charter was presented by County Commander George Martin to Commander Joseph Varnum. The American Flag and Post Colors – by Mrs. Guy James, Junior Past Commander of the Wickliffe chapter of The Blue Star Mothers of America – were presented to Adjutant William Russel to be posted. The Auxiliary Formed

Post Home Purchased

Oct 23, 1945
October 23, 1945 was the next election for the officers to serve for the following 1945-46 term. Ferd Grebb became the second Post Commander, and it was in Ferd Grebb’s term that all papers were signed and the down payment made. The building formerly known as the “Dutch Mill” became the Post’s Home, the membership was increased to 74, a Post Carnival brought in over $1800 and the Post Bowling Team won a trophy!
