Judge William Howard Jeffrey called to order a meeting of WW1 veterans' interested in organizing a post of the American Legion in Toms River. In attendance was Leo Babchin, Co-Chairman of the Ocean County American Legion. Leroy Grant was appointed temporary secretary. Charter members attending were: George W. Toms River Post Adopts a Namesake

The first regular meeting is called to order: Lester McCarthy is elected Vice Commander, Wallace Havens, Historian and Charles Newman as Insurance Officer. The assembly unanimously adopted the name of "George P. Vanderveer". George was born in 1899 in Bayville NJ, he went to war in France and suffered from gas and shell shock, George died of the effects of both at Fort Porter, NY in 1918. Toms River Armistice Day Parade

An invitation from the Toms River Fire Co. #1 to march with them in their Armistice Day parade on the evening of the 11th received unanimous approval from the membership. At their Robbins St. headquarters, after the parade, the firemen presented the post with a new flag and staff. The coupling of the staff had been inscribed, "Presented to American Legion Post 129 by the Toms River Fire Co. #1, Armistice Day 1919". The flag..

George P. Vanderveer's Picture

On December 25th 1919 Mrs. Vanderveer traveled from Bayville to the post meeting and presented a framed portrait of her son George P. Vanderveer. The photograph was probably taken in boot camp and shows George with his rifle, perhaps a Springfield or Enfield at port arms. The picture is also mounted in a place of honor in our foyer and will be ninety seven years old in 2016. At the next meeting the membership approved..
