An outstanding American Legion 100th Anniversary celebration was put on by Joe Miller Elkins Post 96 at the L&N Depot in Murphy, N.C., on Monday May 6, 2019.
Supported by the Cherokee County Veteran's Administration Office, Marine Corps League - Cherokee Detachment #1011, Murphy, AMVETS Post 2015, Murphy, VFW Post 7620 – Andrews, N.C., and the VA Vet Center (PTSD Counseling-1-877-War-Vets) Bus.
Post 96 Commander Larry Thunder Wolf Limon presented an award to Jon Dipert (Bagpiper) who supports the Post 96 Honor Guard at veterans funerals and special events. The commander then presented the early history of The American Legion (1919 timeframe), followed by the mayor of Murphy, Mr. Rick Ramsey, who spoke about his father's WWII service; he was wounded in the Normandy invasion and subsequent battles. The mayor pledged his full support to the Murphy community that has 4,000 veterans.
A free lunch was served by the Unit 96 Auxiliary. A great time was had by all who attended. Post 96 acquired 4 new members, and the Auxiliary 2, at the Post 96 recruiting booth.
