Staff Sergeant David C. Chavez History

Staff Sergeant David C. Chavez was born on May 3rd, 1938 to a large extended family in Las Cruces, New   Mexico.  He was much loved by all.  His parents were the late Elias T. and Trine Chavez.  He was the eldest of five siblings: three sisters, Rosella, Patsy, and Martha, and one brother, Alex.

Before joining the Army, David painted houses with his father and was very good at it, but he yearned to see what other parts of the world were like and the Army gave him that opportunity.  After he joined the Army around 1960, his letters home were few, but enough to let his parents know he was well.  The family was excited in early January 1970, when David wrote home that his personal belongings were on the way home, and that he was coming home.

In November 1968, David earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for heroism for saving the life of another soldier.  The family learned of this after his death.  He earned a total of three Purple Hearts that  the family never knew about either.  Staff Sergeant David C. Chavez was killed on January 15, 1970, in Vietnam while serving with Troop A, First Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.  That was the week he was to come home from his third deployment.

What Makes this Post Unique

Post 1982 supports the USAG Ansbach military community.  Members include Veterans and active duty Soldiers.  All events the post undertakes are done to honor the memory of our Post’s namesake, Staff Sergeant David C. Chavez, who was killed in action in Vietnam and had been assigned to a unit in Crailsheim, Germany, not far from Ansbach. the post is named after.

Post 1982 has a Youth Shooting Team, conducts an annual Oratorical Contest, and sends youth to Boys and Girls State.  Our Post Service Officer and the Department Service Officer (also from our Post) actively work in cooperation and coordination with our local Veterans of Foreign Wars Service officers (both Post- and Department-level on our installation) to provide assistance and support to Veterans and Surviving Spouses both locally and also throughout Europe

We co-host the children and youth of our military community for two "Kid's Fishing Days" each year.  The kids get to fish all morning, with all fishing equipment and bait provided and assistance from fishermen.  Then we provide they and their parents, a free lunch of grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and soft drinks. We also host a Christmas Party for local German orphanage each year, providing them gifts and a meal."
