The Story – During February, American Legion posts across the US recognize "The Four Chaplains." On Sunday, February 10, Ansbach's American Legion Post 1982 held its service at the local post chapel. Five 9th JROTC Battalion cadets participated in the service honoring the four Army chaplains who were killed in the U-boat sinking of the USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943: Methodist minister the Rev. George Fox, Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Dutch Reformed minister the Rev. Clark Poling, and Catholic priest Father John Washington. These men, each of a different faith, sacrificed their lives after their transport ship was torpedoed, giving their life jackets to fellow soldiers. The chaplains stood with their men on the descending wreckage and engaged in song and prayer just before dying. John Ladd, a survivor, testified, “It was the finest thing I have ever seen or hope to see this side of heaven.”
