Post Namesake

Autress Russell was the only black from Memphis killed in France during World War 1. Post 0027 of The American Legion, which by the 1930's was the largest African American Legion Post in the world.

Evelyn Williams and her brother, Ernest Crockett were members of Post 222 before it consolidated with Post 27. At one time, Mr. Crockett was the commander of both post. Mr. Crockett is now deceased but Mrs. Williams is still active in The American Legion and the Auxiliary. This year, she celebrates 58 years of service in The American Legion.

In December of 2009, Autress Russell, Post 27 received a permanent home, located at 2994 Summer Avenue. The property was donated by Mrs. Sue Eubanks of Eubanks Lumber Company. Some of the members of the Post gathered in January 2010 to clean and prepare the building for the first meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
