About This Post

Post Namesake

Mullins-Nickerson Post. Private Lester Wane Mullins, USMC, was killed June 11, 1918 in the Battle of Belleau Wood, France, during WWI and was the first casualty from Archuleta County. Mullins is buried in a military cemetery at Chateau Thierry, France. Jose Belarmino Nickerson, USA, died as a victim of the Bataan Death March and resulting disease in the Philippines in June 1943; he was the county's first casualty of WWII to lose his life on enemy soil. His body was returned to the US in 1950, and he is buried at a private cemetery in Lone Tree, Archuleta County, Colorado.

Notable Members

ACKNOWLEGMENT: When Ronald Willett joined Post 108 in 1974, the Post had no records of any kind. No one could tell Ronnie how the Post got its name, its building, what the Post did, or was supposed to do. Over a period of 2 years, Ronnie reviewed newspaper files, court records, and interviewed WWI and WWII veterans. In 1975, he published a book outlining the Post's early history. During ensuing years, he served as Post Historian, and in virtually every other Post executive office, until stepping into the shadows in 2014. Whatever success this Centennial project might have is because of Ronnie Willett, Post 108's HISTORIAN EMERITUS.

What Makes this Post Unique

Our Post is focused on continuing to serve the Pagosa Springs community. The Post provides an Honor Guard for funerals for our Pagosa veterans. The Post provides a color guard for local Pagosa civic and community events. The Post annually gives a $1,000 college scholarship to a graduating Pagosa high school senior. The Post annually sponsors a Pagosa high school student to Boys State. The Post provides the Pagosa community with services on Memorial Day, July 4th Parade, and Veterans Day. The Post ceremonially disposes tattered and worn flags.
