On February 17th, 1924, Edward Ashton Epperson Post 20 was formed in South Hill. Its first Commander was James Jessup. The post functioned well until a week membership forced its closure in 1927. Dedicated members did not give up. They kept their membership in neighboring post and continued their good works under the guidance of then State Adjutant, Glen Elliott. It was Adjutant Ellliot that come to South Hill on December 16th, 1929 to organize and charter "Crews - Epperson - Puryear" Post 79.
