1st South Hill American Legion Post Chartered

On February 17th, 1924, Edward Ashton Epperson Post 20 was formed in South Hill. Its first Commander was James Jessup. The post functioned well until a week membership forced its closure in 1927. Dedicated members did not give up. They kept their membership in neighboring post and continued their good works under the guidance of then State Adjutant, Glen Elliott. First Post Commander F. E. Bobbitt

Crews- Epperson - Puryear Post 79 was chartered on December 16th, 1929. The membership elected F. E. Bobbitt to serve as its first commander. He served only 7 months until the Post held their regular elections in June 1930. Commander Bobbitt served 27 months with the 80th Division, 317th Infantry, Company A during World War I. He also served with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in Germany after the armistice.

Squadron 79 chartered
