The National Executive Committees passes a resolution authorizing The American Legion Sept. 11 Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide college assistance for the children of U.S. military personnel who have died on active military duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. The program is later renamed The American Legion Legacy Scholarship and in May 2016 is expanded to provide college scholarships to the children of military veterans who are 50 percent or more service-connected disabled.
