About This Post

Post Namesake

Our Bateman-Gallagher Post 668 was formed in 1933, receiving a Temporary Charter from the American Legion on July 31,1933. A permanent Charter was issued on February 23, 1934.

The Post was appropriately named after two World War I infantrymen from Radnor Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Both were graduates of Radnor High School and who interrupted their college studies to serve in the American Expeditionary Forces in France.

1st Lieutenant William Bateman was killed on July 15, 1918, while leading a platoon, part of Company L, 109th Infantry, in the second Marne River battle in France. His unit was guarding the main bridge across the Marne River.

Captain (Acting) Edward G. Gallagher died on October 11, 1918 leading troops of the 3rd Infantry Division in the battle of Montfaucon at Madeline Farm in France, after going through six battles.

The heroism of these two young neighbors was the inspiration and focal point for the tradition of Service that was carried on by the men and women who returned to Wayne with the victorious troops of the A.E.F. in 1919.

There is no space here for even a brief roll-call of those World War I veterans who committed themselves to a life of service to "Veterans and their Families" through the American Legion, now almost 100 years ago. Suffice to record that our Post Home and the standard of service to the community, state and nation, by our members is both a physical and spiritual legacy that we who follow, will never minimize and never forget. We will always be in their debt.
