In March of 1919 a delegation of American veterans convenes to become a charter recognized by the Congress of the United States. In its infancy, the legion was an organization designed for just World War I veterans. The legion wisely admitted veterans of world war II, the Korean war, and Vietnam as a way of staying ahead of father time. With a membership of over 2.7 strong, the American Legion remains a legislative tower of strength in the struggle for veteran health care and benefits.
