Fang A. Wong was unanimously elected to the high Office of National Commander of The American Legion at the Annual National Convention Thursday September 1, 2011, being held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Fang was born February 27, 1948 in Canton, China. He is married to Barbara Wong, also born in Canton, China. They have one son Eric. He was educated at Seward Park High School, New York City, graduating in 1968. Also attended New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), obtaining a BS Degree in 1978. Obtained his Masters Degree at Central Michigan University in 1981. Fang is retired.
He joined the US Army on May 9, 1969 and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer, (CW3) on May 31, 1989, After serving 20 years. Major assignments include, 525th M.I. Group (Macv) Vietnam, 1970-1972. Communications Electronics Command, Fort Monmouth, NJ, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, GA, 3rd Infantry Division, Germany, 2nd Infantry, Korea, Defense Personnel Support Center, Philadelphia, PA.
In 1990 Fang joined the Lt. B. R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post, 1291, in New York City. He has been a member of the Executive Committee, Post Judge Advocate, Adjutant, Constitution & By-laws Committee, Compliance, Special Journal Committees. Honorary Post Commander, Honorary Life Member and presently serves on the Posts Board Of Directors.
Mr. Wong, was on the Department of New York Legion College Task Force, Commander’s Aide, 1998-99, Americanism Chairman, 1999-02, Commander, Department of New York, 2002-03. Fang A. Wong of New York County, was unanimously elected Commander of The American Legion, Department of New York at the 84th Annual Department Convention in Albany, New York, July 18-20, 2002.
At the national level, served on the Americanism Council, Americanism Convention Committee, Distinguished Guests Committee and as National Vice-Commander, 2003-04.
He has been a member of the East Brunswick Township Planning Board and since 1992 member of the Republican Party Municipal Committee, Middlesex County, NJ. His membership in other organizations are, Standing committee Chinese Community Benevolent Association, New York City, 1997 to present.
