Steven D. Crowley was born September 12, 1945 in the San Francisco Naval Hospital just after his father had returned from serving with the 3rd Marine Division. He is a graduate of Belleville High and married his wife JoAnn in 1968 with whom he raised a daughter and two sons.
Steve attended Basic training at Fort Lewis Washington with A Troop, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regt (the Buffalo Soldiers), as part of the 4th Infantry Division. He then spent 10 weeks of Army Medic training at Fort Sam Houston Texas and 4 weeks of advanced medical training at Letterman Hospital San Francisco prior to shipping off for Vietnam.
Spec 4 Crowley earned the Combat Medic Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 2 battle stars, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, as well as the State of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal. While in Vietnam, Steve was famous for treating the maladies of the Vietnamese people, especially the children who called him “Doctor #1, and rescuing and caring for many of the local dogs.
He lives in Nutley with his wife and serves as the Chaplain for Nutley American Legion Post 70 where he is active in a number of the Post’s projects and activities.
