More than 200 persons turned out in support of strengthening Nutley's American Legion Post 70. Founded in 1919 and a strong force in the community until the past few years, townspeople last night pledged to assist members in strengthening both membership and the post's participation in town events.
For several years, Legion Post 70 has sponsored Nutley's Boys' State program and its members have also sponsored two summer American Legion baseball teams which are an integral component of Nutley High's varsity baseball program.
Post Commander Rich McClintick last night thanked Nutley Commissioner Steve Rogers for initiating a community-wide program to assist veterans which led to last night's effort to "save" American Legion Post 70.
Mayor Alphonse Petracco, Parks Commissioner Mauro Tucci, Assemblyman Ralph Caputo and Board of Education trustee Charles Kucinski were among the local officials supporting the effort last night.
"I've been a member of the post for nearly all my life - ever since I graduated at Nutley High School back in the 1950's," Kucinski said as he pledged his support to the American Legion's Post Commander Rich McClintick

The Legion Post also is renewing its effort in offering its facilities for rent, especially for community events, special parties and receptions. Located at 45 Franklin Avenue, the post features a large and immaculate main room with an adjacent beer and liquor bar.
