As reported in the November 13, 1944 edition of the Asbury Park Press; Freehold honored its dead of two world wars at a November 12th ceremony in front of the court house. Gold and silver American Legion certificates were presented to the next of kin of men from this are killed or wounded in action. American Legion Post 54 sponsored the event and commander William J. Carney was one of the speakers. Legion officer, past commander Charles J. Dittmar, distributed the certificates.
