The Gretna American Legion Leonard Conley Post 216 hosted its annual Veterans Day Dinner to honor Gretna area veterans and their immediate family members on Monday, November 12th at the Legion Club. The evening’s guest speaker was Mr. Jerry Eledge. Mr. Eledge is a Vietnam Veteran who was awarded three Purple Hearts for injuries sustained while serving in Viet Nam as a machine gunner in Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He is a life member of the DAV and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The Legion also paid tribute to a local Gretna World War 1 soldier, Private Leonard Conley, for whom Post 216 is named. Private Conley was killed in action during an attack on the German Hindenburg Line near Romagne, France on October 17, 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Campaign.
