§  2-month calendar review:

 

·         Military Funeral Honors Team will be needed on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Richard Duncan.  We have 8 volunteers to date already.

 

·         40 & 8 is having a Chili Supper Fundraiser dinner on Monday, January 8th from 5-7 p.m.

 

·         Next Legion Family Breakfast is Saturday, January 13th from 7-9 a.m.

 

·         SAL Squadron 287 is having a Ham-n-Bean fundraiser dinner on Saturday, February 3rd from 4:30-7 p.m.

 

·         February Legion Family Breakfast is February 10th from 7-9 a.m.

 

·         Valentine Dinner will be Saturday, February 10th from 5:30-7 p.m.

 

§  Savannah High School Leadership Class- a motion was made and seconded to sponsor a student this year.  Motion passed.

§  Legionnaire Brian Stackhouse updated the membership: Cub Scout Pack 60 & Boy Scout Troop 60 re-chartering has been done.  Pinewood Derby will be on 28 January at the Savannah Middle School.

o   Commander Don Dillman called Post 287 to order at 1900 hours.  Chaplain Dave Hehn gave the opening prayer.  A quorum was established with 11 members present.

 

o   Committee Reports:

 

§  Finance Report- given by Finance Officer Timmy Williams: The Military Funeral Honors program has caught up the reimbursements to Post 287 for the military funeral honors rendered in 2017.  Some of the payments had been misplaced when the Military Funeral Honors program centralized all of the state’s scheduling of military honors from Kansas City to Jefferson City.

 

§  American Legion Riders (ALR) (Director Danny Simon)-

 

·         Safety Briefing given by Dave Hehn.  The title was “Bad Habits.”

 

·         ALR gave Legion Finance Officer Tim Williams their $50 donation to go towards ordering a brick at the World War I Memorial in Kansas City.  Legionnaire Williams will place the order.

 

·         Camp Quality the Riders donated $100 and will have their logo on this year’s Camp Quality event t-shirt.  A second $100 was donated, and the Riders will get sponsorship advertising also placed on a golf cart used during the event as well.

 

·         The Riders reviewed and updated their event/ride schedule, during their monthly meeting earlier tonight.

 

·         The Riders will have a “Cage” ride to Post 445’s Soup Dinner this Saturday.

 

·         The Legion Riders are also planning on helping with Post 445’s Tractor Cruise on June 2nd.

 

·         Rider Membership is at 35.  Down by one member from last year’s 36.

 

o   Sons of the American Legion (SAL Commander Terry Beasley)-

§  Ham-n-Bean Dinner planned for Feb 3rd.

 

§  We have some SAL members making plans to attend the Spring Detachment Conference.

§  MOKAN Executive Director Michael Spade would like to come to the SAL Ham-n-Bean dinner on 3 February.  He would like to seek input of the local citizens on a transportation plan.  The input will be used to submit a project for federal funding.

 

§  Legionnaire Rodney Hummer relayed to the Post, that the Mosaic Outreach Clinic CEO would like to address the veterans of Post 287.  The CEO makes regular trips to Washington D.C. for advocacy of various issues.  She will be invited to a future Legion event.

 

§  Post 287 will host the 4th District Re-vitalization on March 3rd for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

o   For the Good of the American Legion:

 

§  Post 287 received a message of thanks for the military funeral honors rendered for Richard Duncan.  The family was very ecstatic for Post 287’s thoughtfulness in helping with the funeral.

 

§  The Andrew County Museum continues to have their Veteran’s Coffee’s on the 3rd Wednesday of every month starting at 1:30 p.m.  Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend.

 

§  Legionnaire Hugh Sheffield asked that the microphone audio system be used to make it easier to hear the meeting proceedings.

 

o   Correspondence: Thank You Card from one of the families who received a free car at the Next Big Thing Event car giveaway, where Post 287 sponsored the payment for licensing the vehicle.

§  Finance Report: Finance Officer Timmy Williams: provided the annual 2017 Income and Expenses Statement

 

§  Sons of the American Legion (Senior Vice Commander Mike Walter)- a need arose for a second year in a row for scientific calculators at a local school.  Mike Walter purchased $75 in calculators in the name of SAL Squadron 287.

 

§  2018 Legion Membership= 218 (91%)

 

o   Sick Call: Cheryl Bilby receiving chemo for lymphoma

 

o   Un-finished Business: 4th District re-vitalization- discussion was deferred to the next meeting.  4th District Commander Goolsby is having some materials from the National Office being mailed to our Post ahead of time.

 

o   New Business: The Auxiliary purchased a ventless exhaust fan for our use during the breakfast and dinner events whenever the large electrical grill was to be in use.  As is turns out, the ventless grill will not work for our current needs.  The grill will be returned and the Auxiliary will be reimbursed $199.

§  SAL Mike Walter thanked the Post on behalf of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Funeral Home for rendering military funeral honors this last week.  The three funeral services had experienced adverse weather.  All three families were all greatly appreciative.

·         Chapter 287 will consider doing the Camp Quality escort from Barry Road to Camp Quality this summer, plus other volunteer activities.

 

·         Mike Grimm and Timmy Williams recently attended the Department’s Spring Conference in Jefferson City.

 

·         2018 Missouri Legacy Scholarship Ride will start in Sikeston, Missouri.  At the time of the event registration riders/participants will be required to show proof of membership to the American Legion Riders, and have a DOT approved helmet.

§  Sons of the American Legion (SAL) (Squadron Commander Terry Beasley):

 

·         Detachment SAL Member of the Year- Ron Raines of Squadron 287

 

·         Current Budget: $5,107

 

·         SAL Squadron 287 is sponsoring one student this year to Missouri Boys State.  The student will be a 4th District unsponsored student from Park Hill South High School.

 

·         Donation Commitments made at our March meeting included:

 

o   Missouri Boys State Sponsorship = $400

 

o   Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) = $300

 

o   Camp Quality = $100

 

o   School Nurse Supply Fund = $100

 

o   The Rosecrans Chiefs Association = $25

 

·         Post 287 Auxiliary donated $200 to the SAL Squad 287 Veterans Day of Honor program.  The donation will go towards getting supplies needed to conduct the next event in Saint Joseph to approximately 60 veterans.

 

·         Veterans Day of Honor briefings on how to conduct and host the event will be given to the National Vice Commander Bryon Callies, Kansas Detachment Commander, and to squadrons in the Saint Louis and southeastern region of Missouri.

 

·         The materials for doing a Veterans Day of Honor program have been made available on the YouTube internet site.

 

·         Possible promotions in the near future include:

 

o   Mark Brock may become next year’s Detachment Commander

 

o   Mike Walter may step up to the Western Vice Commander position

 

o   There will be a need for a Detachment Historian to help Mark if he is elected to the next Detachment Commander.

 

o   The Sergeant-at-Arms position will also need to be filled if Mike Walter moves into the Western Vice Commander position.

 

§  2018 Legion Membership= 221 (93%)

§  Un-finished Business:

 

·         4th District re-vitalization:

 

o   Held on 3 March 2018.  3 Legion Posts out of the 21 were represented.  The Posts represented were: Post 100, Post 359, and host Post 287.

 

o   National Vice Commander Byron Callies and other Department guests were there.  They conducted telephone calls on behalf of the 4th District and were treated to lunch before they had to go to their next stop in Smithville.

 

o   Results for the 4th District currently stand at 40 transfers from Post 1000 to various Posts of the District.  The overall gain for Post 287 was 5.  The transfers included: William Simpson, Vernon Wright, Harry Curtis, Larry Price and Gene (Tony) Claycomb

 

·         Missouri Boys State Sponsorships:

 

o   Savannah High School- one student will be sponsored by be the Savannah Lions Club.

 

o   Lafayette High School- one student will be sponsored by American Legion Post 287.

 

o   Maryville High School- one student will be sponsored by American Legion Post 287.

 

o   Park Hill South High School- one student will be sponsored by SAL Squadron 287.

 

o   Platte County High School- one student will be sponsored by The American Legion Riders Chapter 287.

 

§  New Business:

 

·         Military Funeral Honors request for Gwendon Fleming

 

·         Andrew County Museum needs the car title to the old Model T.  To our current membership’s knowledge, no one really knows where the title is, or who possessed it last.  The title could not be found within the files at the Post or records stored in the safe deposit box.

 

·         All-classes High School reunion will be during the 2nd Saturday in June.  The Post will prepare for extra guests during the monthly Legion Family Breakfast.

 

§  For the Good of the American Legion:

 

·         The Andrew County Health Department thanked Dick Munkres Post 287 for our donation to their School Nurse Supplies program.

 

·         Legionnaire Hugh Sheffield stated he has recently received 2 mail solicitations for money from organizations claiming to be The American Legion, when in fact they were not.  Be aware!

o   Guests/Prospective New Members Present: Marlin Slagle, 4th District Central Vice Commander, Greg Kline, new member, and Steve Sullender returning former member.

§  Will have a gradual increase in ride activity as the weather warms up.

§  Cameron Veterans Home- we are communicating with the Director, and we may have some increased volunteer hours and opportunities in 2018.

 

§  The Legion Riders have been requested by an organization in Cameron to help with a fundraiser activity scheduled for May 31st.

 

o   2018 Legion Membership= 227 (95%).  Welcome back to two former members who rejoined Post 287: Steve Sullender and Richard Edward.

o   New Business: Andrew County Government Day- scheduled for April 12th.  Students will have a tour of the jail at 0900 hours.  They are expected at the courthouse at 1000 hours.  We will provide a flag folding ceremony, office tours and a lunch meal.

§  Korean War Digital Memorial- Edner Rudolph and William Simpson were recently interviewed at Missouri Western State University by Brooke Rich and Derek Frieling.  There historic accounts will be added to the Korean War Digital Memorial website at: kmvdm.org

 

§  Annual Reports submitted to Department & National included: Post Data Record, Consolidated Post Report, and Children & Youth Report.
