Veterans Outreach Event

We planned and hosted a Veterans Outreach Event, the first of its kind. Being in a rural are of southwest Mississippi, our Post members coordinated veteran-related services and organizations to come to Monticello for a 'one-stop shopping' event on benefits and information. Added to that, we were extremely grateful 2014 Miss Mississippi Jasmine Murray attended and supported the event. For years the local VFW had handled the county-wide Veterans Day observance. The VFW Post disbanded just as we were 'activating' and we knew this was a date not to let slip by. The Post membership coordinated the whole event which had a great turnout. Along with it, various local merchants (through the Post's efforts) offered meal specials for everyone getting something to eat afterwards. Following the United States declaration of war against Germany in 1917, General John Pershing was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). The AEF was something new to the American military and required an immediate build-up of forces.
