Fifteen returned veterans of World War I of the Lake Crystal community met Oct. 10, 1919, in the hall over hall over the Meixell Building to organize an American Legion Post. They convened at the call of Dr. Fred Franchere, who had secured the necessary 15 names in order to apply for a charter.
Signing the application for the charter were M.M. Meixell, Dr. Fred Franchere, Evan H. Hughes, W.L. Thomas, Emil Bredeson, Clarence Helleckson, Gordon Halvorson, Lee Norman, J. Elmer Nelson, Clayton Robinson, Henning Johnson, Alfred Johnson, Edwin Griffith, Alvin Jones and Earl Norman. John W. Roth Post 294 grew to 107 - practically 100% of the veterans in the community eligible for membership.
The Post has continued to play a vital part in the life of the community.
