Edward L. Marshall was the first Post Commander of 271. He was an American Legion activist and assisted in building the new hall on Beech Daly.
Edward was a WW1 veteran of the U.S. Army, 28th Division, Company C, 103rd Combat Engineers. He enlisted May 28, 1918 and was sent to Europe July 14, 1918. He served as a munitions worker and fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive from Sept 25 - October 9, 1918 and then in Thicourt, France from October 15 - November 11, 1918. Following Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, he remained stationed in Europe until April 30, 1919. He was honorably discharged on May 16, 1919. He took up residence in Redford Township and worked as a radiator worker for the Cadillac Motor Co.
