The first meeting of the American Legion Ray Stone Post #238 was held in the lower Town Hall in November 1919. After a while the meetings moved to the hall over the old Town Fire Barn, but the Legion found it inadequate, and moved back to the lower Town Hall. Our first outing was in the summer of 1926, when we camped out at Mount Monadnock in East Jaffrey, NH. There we had big ball game and all kinds of good food and drinks. Our other outings were held at Phil Prouty's barn in Barre. These ran for quite a few summers. 1927 was Shrewsbury's 200th Anniversary and a big year for the Post. We marched in the parade with our new Legion uniforms. We also took part in the celebration with raising the flag in the morning, firing of the cannon (which survived into the 1990s), and the ringing of the Congregational Church bell. In 1928, automobile accidents were numerous, which inspired us to raise funds for the first town ambulance.
