In January 2012, the Legion members decided that placing a wooden cross and a flag each Memorial Day at the cemeteries, then pick them all up again and store them until the next year was getting to be a chore. The go ahead was given by the cemetery boards and the task of 400 steel crosses was undertaken. Penny Madsen Rosso was contacted in Omaha, Nebraska. The steel was purchased at her cost by the Legion. All the cutting was done by Penn Steel and delivered to Anthon. Welding was accomplished by several of the local members and non-members at various locations. Grinding and inspection was completed and the crosses were sent back to Omaha for a powder coating. A company in Omaha powder coated them at no charge. Several volunteers began digging holes for the crosses to be placed permanently in concrete next to the headstones at Oak Hill, Midway Cemetery, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. They each have a flag holder on the back where a flag can be inserted. What used to take several hours will be cut to less than an hour with the help of a few volunteers. The project was completed in the Fall of 2013.
