The community building, commonly known as the Legion Hall, was erected in the year 1925. The excavation started April 22, 1925, and the corner stone was laid on July 11, with Editor Frank Miles, of the Iowa Legionnaire, as the speaker for the day. On Armistice, the citizens of Hartley and surrounding territory celebrated the event with the dedication of Hartley's fine new Legion Memorial-a $32,000 building. Geo. W. Prichard, of Onawa, Ninth District Commander, delivered the address of the day. This building can be called the Community Memorial building as it has been financed through the generosity of the citizens of Hartley and vicinity. The Woman's Relief Corps opened the dining hall by serving a dinner and supper to a capacity crowd. A dance was held in the evening accommodating one of the largest crowds in the Northwest Iowa.
