American Legion Post 16 making to host The Moving Wall in Shelton

An estimated 200 plus motorcycle riders met The Wall at the state line in Danbury at 1PM on October 11th. Miss Connecticut was among the 200 riders as they escorted The Wall into Shelton where; members of Post 16 along with color guards from various organizations greeted the Wall as it came down Canal Street to Veterans Park.

The Moving Wall is a ½ scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. The Moving Wall stands 6 ft. in height at the center and gradually tapers to 4 ft. panels at each end. Each wall of the two that make up one structure is 126.2 ft in length, for a total length of 252.4 ft. It has been touring the country for over twenty years.

The Moving Wall was assembled at Veterans Park on the River Walk in Shelton on October 12 and departed on October 16 2006. The Opening ceremony was Thursday the 12th at 5PM and included a reading of the Valley Vietnam Casualties’ names followed by Taps and a 21 Gun Salute. That Friday over 2,000 intermediate and high school students visited the wall and met with in-country Vietnam Vets as part of the Post Moving Wall committee’s educational program. Closing ceremonies held on Sunday the 15th at 1PM included the reading of all 612 Connecticut Vietnam Casualties’ names followed by a Fallen Warrior Ceremony.
