The Alaska American Legion sponsored a contest from the Alaskan children's schools for a design for the territorial flag. The competition yielded 142 entries and a young boy of 13 years won the competition. Benny Benson was sponsored by Seward Post 5. Benny was a student at the Jessie Lee Home (orphanage) in Seward where many children from "Periphery" or "the Bush" came to live and learn.
Four other children in Seward also submitted flag designs but Benny won from all others in the state.
