A November post (http://www.legiontown.org/other/3315/centennial-celebration-pancake-breakfast-american-legion-post-129) on the Legiontown blog describes a “Centennial Celebration Pancake Breakfast” put on by Carter C. Hanner-Mamon G. Sharp Post 129 in Stillwater, Okla., to raise money for Children & Youth programs. In attendance was the entire Oklahoma State University wrestling team and their coach, Olympic gold medalist John Smith, who gave a presentation and bought 50 breakfast tickets for the team. The connection to the Centennial Celebration came from a display set up to promote it during the event. And Post 129 (http://centennial.legion.org/oklahoma/post129) is set to serve as an example of what celebrating can do, thanks to Gerald McClain. The Vietnam War Army veteran is post historian and Centennial Celebration chairman – and also holds both positions for the department. “In order to do the historian job and the Centennial Celebration job,” McClain says, “I use my post for opportunities to demonstrate Centennial Celebration events for the other posts in the state.” To keep the 100th Anniversary firmly top of mind, he is urging Oklahoma posts to, like Post 129, add “Centennial Celebration” to the titles of all their events through 2019. One use of the tag, McClain says, is to recruit new members to the post, which may end up setting the past even more firmly in its future: he is considering getting “Centennial” added to the official name of the post, which was first organized in 1919 and received its charter in 1920.
