Commander Walker opened the meeting at 7:30 pm

Sergeant-at-Arms, pt, Rose Hodgeboom introduced visitors, guests and prospective members: 4th District Commander, Frank Sterling and his wife, Patsy; Brenda and Joseph Carey; Ashley Strauss and Sue and Dave Finch. Sue is the daughter of Robert (Bob Haas). Sign in sheet is attached.

 

 

 

Charter was draped in memory of Robert (Bob) Haas, and Robert L Lichter, Army, WWII. Bob Haas was a PUFL and a recipient of the Department Blue Cap Legionnaire of the year.  His daughter, Sue, assisted the Sergeant-at-Arms in the draping.

 

 

 

Ashley Strauss spoke on the Thurston County Veterans Fund. Fifty-five veterans received some $44,000 in assistance this past year. The fund assists veterans with such things as utilities, and cremation. It also provides food vouchers and bus passes. Limits are currently $500 for an individual and $800 for a family. The County as looking how it may be able to increase these amounts in the future. Veterans can receive assistance twice in a lifetime and there must be at least 12 months between receipt. Assistance is based on income. Veterans must have resided in the county for the past 31 days and the state for the past six months. Ashley is also part of the incarcerated veterans’ program. Commander Walker presented Ashley with a Legion coin and thanked her for her work with veterans.


 

 

 

 

Committee Reports

 

 

 

·       Adjutant Granish reported that membership is currently 151 of goal of 213, 70.89%.

 

·       Finance Officer Dave Hodgeboom reported balance is currently $4,265.93 and Evergreen Boys State is currently at $285.34. He has received a letter from Santa’s Castle thanking the Post for our support.

 

·       Commander reported that the Boy Scouts will give us a presentation in January and the Sidewalk Homeless Program will be at our February meeting.

 

·       Service Officer Rose Hodgeboom reported that she has processed some 30 claims over the past month. She also reported that the post hosted the Department Service Officer as she presented a service officer class on November 15 and 16.

 

·       Chaplain Otis Chapman reported Corky Cunningham and Karen Grundler are doing well. He also reported on our participation is Bob Haas’ funeral.

 

·       Claudia Johnston, Unit 94, spoke on Evergreen Boys State and that they are working on free buses. We need to get to the schools.

 

Business and Correspondence

 

·       Adjutant Granish reported on proposed changes to our By-Laws. They will be posted on our website and Facebook page for comment. Amended By-Laws will be presented for approval at our January 11, 2019 regular meeting. A copy is attached.

 

·       Commander spoke on our support of the Stand Down in November. Eighty-two food baskets were handed out. He thanked everyone who helped out.

 

·       Commander reported that the paperwork for the septic tank riser rebate has been submitted to the Thurston County Health Department.

 

·       Commander appointed Rose Hodgeboom, Len Tobin and Otis Chapman to an ad hoc committee to review use of donations made in the name of deceased members.

 

·       Commander appointed Dave Hodgeboom, Larry Granish and Eric Strom to an ad hoc committee on creating a “wall of remembrance” and how to best recognize our past commanders.

 

·       A resolution on National Defense Strategy was discussed and will be formally presented for Post approval at our January meeting.

 

Good of the Legion:

 

·       Past Department Commander, Dave Hodgeboom spoke on the Department Mid-Winter Conference, scheduled for the Olympia Red Lion, February 1 and 2.

 

·       Fourth District Commander, Frank Sterling, was escorted forward and spoke on supporting those on active duty.
