The American Legion’s State Commander and Education Chairman were in Grandview Monday, October 26th, to present the Department (State) Educator of the Year Award to a Grandview teacher.

Perhaps heralding the event, a rainbow seemingly touched down at Grandview Middle School just minutes before the assembly of 850 students was gathered to see the surprise announcement that sixth grade teacher Jackie Mendoza was receiving this special award.

In opening remarks, the Legion’s State Education Chairman, Loren Sperry of Lake Stevens, mentioned Ms. Mendoza’s contributions to the school and students, but her community and church involvement as well. The students were surprised she did so much.

The Award, one of only two presented annually in the state, was presented by State Commander Jim Broe of Bellevue. In addition, Ms. Mendoza received a check for $250 that she may use in any manner she desires in her classroom.

Grandview’s Fred E. Hayes Post 57 of The American Legion endorsed the nomination made by leadership at Grandview Middle School last spring. “The process is quite specific,” said Robert Gates, Post Commander. “Our Adjutant was frantic in gathering missing material so the application could be submitted on time,” he added. Assistant Principal Carol Bardwell was very helpful in getting the needed material in spite of other significant demands on her time.

The application was reviewed and selection was made at the State Convention in Spokane in July. “It’s really hard to keep something secret that long,” said Gates, “but it looks like we were able to do it.” He noted it was fun to arrive at the school and hear people asking why there was an assembly as well as the reaction from Jackie. Mendoza’s family was able to see the presentation, though they were kept out of sight until the actual presentation.

“We’re so happy a school finally came up with a nomination,” said Post member Ray Vining, who is the Post’s Education Chairman. “I know we have tried hard to get nominations, so it was gratifying to see someone finally follow through.”
