Post 41 participated in the Department of Virginia's Middle School Essay Contest for the first time. The one page essay must begin with the words: "I like living in America because..." and must be written during class time. The winning essay is forwarded to the District-level competition.
Fifty-four students ay Johnson-Williams Middle School wrote essays. The winning essay was written by Sarah Dalton, an eighth grader at Johnson-Williams Middle School. Donna Michael is her Language Arts teacher. The winning student received a certificate and a check for $25 and the winner's teacher received $25 to be used for the purchase of school supplies. Legionnaire Ed Novak presented Sarah and Ms. Michael checks and certificates.
