The Clarke County Memorial Cemetery Association has started a preservation project on historic Stone’s Chapel Church which was built in 1793. The last worship service in the church was over ten years ago and the building has been neglected since then. Larry Hardesty, a member of Post 41, is in charge of the project.

The floors in the sanctuary were recently treat for wood borers and refinished. All of the pews had to be removed for the project. On December 29, 2010, members of Post 41 volunteered to move the heavy wooden pews back into the church’s sanctuary. Bob Jackson organized the work team of legionnaires and friends to handle the heavy lifting. John Harris and Bob Heflin prepared a nice lunch of chili, hotdogs, coffee, and soft drinks.

Fifteen legionnaires and three friends of the Legion helped with this community service project. As with all of our Legion projects, there were plenty of supervisors for the fellows doing the heavy lifting. Thanks to everyone who helped.

During the project, we found an interesting marble plaque in the church sanctuary. It was in memory of Robert Edgar Russell who was killed in action during World War I. The plaque had been presented to the church by the Woman’s Auxiliary of Lloyd Williams Post 41.
