Post 41 sponsored “Christmas In April” for the patients in the Nursing Care Units at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. This unique activity was suggested by Legionnaire Carle “Bing” Germelman as a way to assist the veterans living in the Nursing Care Units.

Members of our Post family donated DVD movies, socks, and toiletries for the patients. The estimated value of the items donated was over $1,500 and included 121 DVD movies and 12 dozen pairs of socks. The first question one of the patients asked was, “Do you have any John Wayne movies?” When told there were eight John Wayne movies, he responded with a loud “Hoorah!” and declared the next day as “John Wayne Movie Day”.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Dan Allen for his generous donation of six cases of toothpaste and a case of toothbrushes. Legionnaire Bill Stewart also donated over 80 DVD movies. Thanks to everyone who assisted in this project.

Legionnaires Bob Jackson, John Harris, and Bob Ferrebee delivered the gifts on April 9th and visited with many of the veterans. The gifts were greatly appreciated by the patients and staff. The Post hopes to makes “Christmas In April” an annual event.
