Born May 27,1894 in Bellows Falls, VT living on 17 Henry St Bellows Falls he was a son of a local physician.Enlisted June 2, 1917 Section 510 US Army Ambulance Service working with the French Army , his overseas tour was 8/17/17 to 4/23/1919. He received the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star on Jan 8, 1918 and it reads: In spite of violent bombardment he unflinchingly crossed a barrage to reach the first aid station to evacuate the wounded, Edward C. Kirkland returned and made his life spectacular. He became a professor at Bowdoin College from 1930-1959. He wrote several books . He received his Ph.d from Harvard and honorary doctorates from many Ivy League colleges. He died May 24, 1975 and is buried in Thetford,VT.
