
Lyle Edward Hansen

Born in Fairhaven, VT but spent most of his life a resident of Rutland, Vt.
WWII veteran serving as a gunner in the Coast Artillery for the Royal Montreal Regiment.
Member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He was a service representative for Pitney Bowes company, retiring 1965. Also worked for Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS).
Charter and life member of Chapter 7 DAV (Disabled American Veterans) of Rutland. Past Adjutant for Vermont Department DAV. Past National Aide-de-camp of the DAV.

1957-58 Post Commander he was a candidate for Rutland City Alderman, however due to a bylaw of The American Legion he felt he could not hold office as Alderman and Post Commander, so he resigned his candidacy. He was quoted as saying his loyalty was to the post that he had sworn his allegiance to.
He was awarded and acknowledged by the National DAV and other veterans organizations for his dedication to fundraising for and spearheading placing war memorials in three Rutland city cemeteries. He was also President of the Veterans council and began identifying and keeping updated records of veterans buried in all City and Town graves. Those records of grave sites were to be registered and kept with the Veterans Council.
He also identified a young Black Civil War Soldier that had been segregated from the rest of his GAR white soldier’s. The soldier was exhumed and buried with his brothers in Evergreen Cemetery. ( See photo display of write up. )
He died in 1974 at the age of 57 years old. He is buried amongst grateful soldiers at Calvary Cemetery. His funeral was widely attended by grateful veterans.
