Ernest Ray Nichols

Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado.Move to North Clarendon.
WWI and WWII veteran.
WWII enlisted with his brother in law, Thomas Gleason, on 12/3/1942 with the Marines and was assigned to the Marine Recruitment Station in Rutland until 1944. He lived in North Clarendon where he owned and operated the Ko-Z diner and cabins on Rte 7.
He was Post Commander from 1944-45 when he returned, and immediately became actively involved in fundraising for a new post home which was located at 11 Evelyn Street. Donations of furniture and features were given by other organizations. The post wanted a comfortable “home” environment for returning GI’s from WWII.
1942 His son died age 23 years old during WWII in Manila, Philippines.
Member of the Baptist church, Rutland Lodge of Masons, Shriner, Rutland Elks, Odd Fellows.
1947 Worked on the Clarendon audit team for the town.
He died in 1968 from a cerebral hemorrhage and is buried in the Clarendon Cemetery.
