
John B. Heald Jr., 71, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, 2017, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH, surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
He was born March 28, 1946, in Meriden, CT.
John served as the adjutant numerous times, service officer and commander for J. Claire Carmody Post 39. He was department assistant sergeant at arms numerous times, Rutland County commander, Fourth District commander a couple times, senior vice commander for 2015-2016 and as the commander for 2016-2017. Additionally, he served as department Americanism chairman a couple of times, Boys' State chairman, membership chairman, VAVS Committee chairman and a member of the National Americanism Council. He also was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 39 and a charter member the Legion Riders Post 39. John was a true Legionnaire in the sense that he cared for veterans and their families.
