Born in Cambridge and grew up in Underhill VT 7/12/1898.
Enlisted onApril 17, 1917 Co. F 1st VT Infantry - Seppt 1917; HQ Company 103rd Infantry to discharge. Overseas Sept 25, 1917 to April 5, 1919 DC April 28, 1919 SGT. 26th Yankee Division.He was severely gassed during the war and wounded twice.
He lived in Lebanon, NH for a few years and then moved to Barre, VT.
He was a Past Commander of the Waterbury Post 59, (later to be renamed the Harry N. Cutting post)
Civilian Life: Plant manager for the Barre Granite Company and Rock of Ages.
1940 Department Vice Commander and Department Membership Chairman he significantly increased the membership of the Department that year.
Department Chairman of Employment and organized many disaster relief and blood donor programs across the state.
He was a staunch supporter of the Legions' National Defense Program.
1941 fellow Post 59 Legionnaire and Department Service officer Harry N. Cutting gave his nomination speech for Department Commander. Before he could finish the speech, the crowd of Legionnaires were making motions to accept the nomination and unanimously elected him Department Commander. He was well loved by many.
Chairman of Washington County Civilian Recruiting and National Defense Committee.
During WWII he was named Chief Consultant for War Manpower Commission for the State of Vermont.
1943 His staunch support of National Defense positions and anti communism stance brought him into a local ban on Jehovah Witnesses wanting to use the municipal offices for meetings. Local citizens mobbed the town officials meetings and Ed was asked to speak. He believed the sect were consciencious objectors and draft dodgers and swayed the crowd to not allow them to use the facilities. The arguments were contentious and caused divide in the town and some violent attacks on the members of the sect.
1945 He was promoted to Colonel and Commanding officer of the Vt State Guard. 2nd Bn, Region 2, Barre, VT area.
August 1, 1979 at the age of 81, he died of cardiac arrest. He had suffered several strokes and had dysphagia causing aspirational pneumonia. He is buried in St. Monica Cemetery, Barre, VT
